Today, January 7th, in Japan, we eat “Nanakusa Gayu”.
This is a traditional Japanese dish eaten on the morning of January 7th to pray for good health.
Eating the young shoots of the seven herbs and taking in the vitality of the plants, it is filled with the wish to be in good health.
The seven herbs are seri, shepherd’s purse, go (o) gyo, chickweed, hotokenoza, suzuna, and suzushiro.

・White rice 180g
・Water 900g
・ Nanakusa 100g
・White dashi stock 2 tablespoons
・Salt: Appropriate amount

▼how to make

  1. Add washed white rice and 5 times the amount of water to the pot.
  2. Add the shirodashi and when it boils, stir well, cover and cook over low heat for 20 minutes.
  3. Taste and season with salt, then add the chopped nanakusa.
  4. After heating for 2 to 3 minutes, it’s ready to serve!
